What are internships?
We've all heard of internships but do you know exactly what it is? An internship is a paid or un-paid short term work experience. College credit can also be given for some internships. The goal behind an internship is to try out a field you're interested in pursuing, and also to give you some real-world experience under your belt.
Are internships important?
Internships can sometimes be the ticket to a new job. Not all, but some internships have the opportunity to be hired full-time at the end of your term, assuming you've done a good job. An internship will also...
- Strengthen your working skills
- Build your resume
- Increase your marketability
- Expand your network and gain professional references
According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, internships are employers' #1 method of recruiting new hires. Employers take many things into consideration when hiring for jobs : academic background, professionalism, experience (including work, internship and volunteer) and demeanor during an interview. Most employers are looking for candidates who can express why they want to work somewhere and how they can help their company.
